Legal Jobs

Dont object to a career in the legal industry. Paralegals, attorneys, court reporters, judges, and more are among the options for individuals seeking to work in the legal industry. Jobs are available in the judicial system, on the local, state, and federal level, as well as in law firms, companies, and even non-profit groups.

In the legal career, opportunities abound for advancement, from entry-level jobs to putting in those long hours to reach partner positions with six-figure incomes. Jobs for lawyers are expected to grow by 10 percent, from 2010 to 2020, fueled by the demand for legal services among individuals, businesses, and the government, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Attending law school typically is a three-year commitment, on top of earning a four-year undergraduate degree, and attorneys also have to pass the bar exam.

Attorneys who are skilled in resolving conflict can take on the role of an arbitrator, mediator, or conciliator. After years of experience (and often strong political support), some attorneys don the robe as a judge to oversee the judicial process.

You dont have to have a law degree to work in the industry, as paralegals, jury and trial consultants, electronic discovery professionals, law librarians, and legal assistants. Paralegals, for example, typically hold at least an associates degree and earn annual median pay of $46,680, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Since paralegals are less costly that attorneys and can perform a number of duties, employers seeking to reduce costs are helping drive job growth for paralegals (the Bureau forecasts an 18 percent increase in jobs from 2010 to 2020).

Working in the legal field requires strong communication, interpersonal, and research skills, whether you are defending a client, helping a company stay out of trouble and address legal issues, or leading the judicial process. From a small law firm in your town to the U.S. Supreme Court, the appeal of legal jobs may mean the verdict is in on your career choice.
