Insurance Jobs

Help individuals, families, and companies protect themselves and provide peace of mind by assisting them with all of their insurance needs.

Health, auto, life, disability, and long-term care insurers have an array of needs in finance, claims, customer service, information technology, medical, clerical, marketing and communications, human resources, and other areas.

As health care reform seeks to provide affordable insurance to more Americans, insurance jobs are going to be in demand. One type of position, insurance sales agents, is expected to see 22 percent growth from 2010 to 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The aging population also is causing a need for more workers to fill insurance jobs, especially related to health insurance and long-term care insurance.

Commission-based jobs are available for those entering the insurance sales field, working for an insurance agency to bring the best plans and prices to individuals and companies. You also can venture into other niche insurance areas, such as pet and travel insurance. Another type of insurance job is working as a claims adjustor or policy processing clerk, for a insurance carrier, or insurance agency or broker.

Employers seeking to fill insurance jobs look for individuals with at least a high school diploma. Getting a college degree, however, is a route some individuals working in the insurance industry take. More than one-third of insurance sales agents, for example, hold a bachelors degree, according to the Bureau. You also will need to have licensing from your state to work as an insurance agent.

To work in an insurance job, you need to have the ability to decipher and communicate information about insurance policies and coverage to customers, especially individuals with limited knowledge about insurance. If you are in one of the commission-based insurance jobs, you will need to have a self-starter nature and take initiative in finding and maintaining clients. In an insurance job, you could be working out of a physical office or traveling to meet clients where they work or live.

Insurance jobs offer an interesting career option for individuals who want to help others prepare for the unknown and feel more secure in their future.
